Review: How to Marry a Highlander

how to marry a highlanderReviewed by Carrie

I should really learn to look up a book before agreeing to review simply to know what I’m getting in to. This is a novella set in a series, but fortunately for me, it held up all on its own.

Teresa Finch-Freeworth is on borrowed time. She’s nearly on the shelf and her parents are all but demanding she marry the boring town vicar. A visit with the town gossip delivers the news that the Earl that she was enraptured by last season was in town with his seven sisters. Teresa screws up her courage and goes on a Hail Mary trip to London with the goal of snaring the man or at the very least having an adventure before her dull future becomes reality. Duncan, the Earl of Eads, is down on his luck. He’s still grieving the deaths of loved ones and on the verge of losing the family estate and lands. Duncan brings his seven colorful sisters to town to find them suitable husbands when Teresa comes knocking on his door with a ridiculous proposal – if she finds a husband for each sister within a month, he must marry her.

Teresa was a delight to read. She didn’t let the fact that she would be resigned to a humdrum life with the town vicar stop her from dreaming big. From her gossip influenced stories to trying to corral Duncan’s lively sisters, she met each challenge with her shoulders squared and a positive attitude. I loved that she was willing to take a chance and put herself out there. Even more, I loved that though Duncan tried to gently dissuade her, he didn’t demean or belittle her.

Duncan was perfect as a wounded man. His tragic past kept him from letting his heart run away with Teresa even as his body was already gone for her. There is some mention of his shady past and the ball where they first felt this instant attraction and that is probably the only part where reading the previous books might have lent better reference. Duncan’s sisters were a charming, if predictable, addition to the story.

I would recommend this novella for anyone looking for a lovely lighthearted story with a verra sexy Scot. I know I’ll be tracking down the rest of the series.
