Review: Grave Secret

grave secretReviewed by Jen

I will give Sierra Dean due credit. She has crafted a world and characters that have completely sucked me in. I can’t stop reading these books.  I have feelings –very strong feelings—about these stories that I cannot ignore. This says a lot about Dean’s gift as a writer.   Book after book, I am on the edge of my seat, thanks to the great pacing, the plotline, the action and the danger.  And book after book, I find myself inordinately pissed off with at least one of the characters and increasingly incensed by Secret’s romantic entanglements.  In past book, all my hate went to Lucas. But here… here I think I am starting to hate Secret too.

Hate Secret? You gasp.  She’s the main character! She is tough and vulnerable. She is funny and sympathetic.  All true.  But she does something in this book that I just don’t understand. Something that made me call her unflattering names.  You see, I can understand the appeal of the different men in her life.   I can understand her wanting to explore her feelings for them.  But she acts with virtually no regard for the feelings of these men she is supposed to love. And frankly, I am to the point where I feel like she doesn’t deserve any of them.  Pick a dude.  Have sex with that dude if you want.  If you want to be with another dude, STOP BEING WITH THE FIRST DUDE, then get freaky.  Secret’s actions showed such blatant disregard for one of her men, even the other characters call her on it.

(*sigh*) Moving on. I loved everything else about this book.  The basic plot is that Lucas’s sister Kellan has gone missing –and Secret gets tasked to find her. It involves her traveling to another land to seek out her friend. She has to make a major sacrifice to get the job done and it was really intriguing to see how she dealt with the fallout.  I loved that Secret finally sees the writing on the wall with Lucas and sticks to her guns. I loved seeing the softer side of Holden.  Even though I am all about Desmond, we get to really explore Holden’s feelings for the first time and it made me see why he has a team rooting for him.

Plus – there’s a big OMG moment that’s a huge sucker punch.  It’s not only a huge emotional blow for Secret, but the catalyst for where the series is headed next.  My emotions were all over the place with this one. I was never bored and I couldn’t put it down.  But it made me mad a lot.

Rating: I can’t commit.  It was good, but I am mad.
