Review: Unconditional

unconditionalReviewed by Jaimie

The Cascadia Wolves series was my first experience with Lauren Dane’s work and since then I have devoured everything she has written.  While I love all her books, this series holds a special place in my heart.  We have seen brief glimpses of the wolves in the De La Vega Cats and Bound by Magick books but I was really excited to return to the world of Nina, Cade, Grace, et al.  The wait was worth it – Unconditional was an excellent addition to the series and it sets up stories for the other two series as well!

Police Officer Michelle Slattery is woken up one morning by a frantic call from her best friend’s mother reporting that there has been a struggle at her friend’s apartment and that she is missing.  As a witch, Michelle is vaguely aware that witches are being targeted all over but she has no idea how bad the situation is.  The Owen witch clan sends her to the offices of the Pacific Pack for tracking help and she runs into someone she never thought she would see again.  As the Enforcer for the Pacific Pack, Josh is fully aware of what has been going on with the witches and when Michelle, his high school sweetheart, shows up the man is determined to help her find her friend.  The wolf is determined to claim its mate.

While Nina is probably my all time favorite female character from Ms. Dane’s books, I loved Michelle.  A no-nonsense kind of girl, she is confident in her ability and her job.  At the same time, she is not determined to block Josh out and turn down his help which was a refreshing change.  I also really loved that Josh had confidence in Michelle and didn’t try to wrap her in cotton and protect her since she was a poor helpless woman.  The couple had each other’s backs but not in a suffocating kind of way.

While looking for Michelle’s friend they encounter a dark magick, the likes of which none of them have dealt with before.  The witches, wolves and cats are all on a quest to figure out who and what is behind this, while protecting their people from the attacks.   While Michelle becomes more confident with her craft, they make progress in discovering who is behind the attacks but the enjoyable part for me was watching her become involved with characters we have loved for a  long time.  I hate when authors continue a “series” but we never hear from the ones that started it all again.

I have a love/hate relationship with the way these books end. Love because it sets up for the next one perfectly and hate because now I have to wait to see what happens and the next book can’t come soon enough!  If you are a fan of the Cascadia Wolves, de La Vega Cats or Bound By Magick series be sure to read this installment.  If you haven’t read any of them yet – start at the beginning you won’t be sorry!
