Review: Tempted by Two

This was a little bit of storytelling and a lot of sex. If that’s good enough for you, you can stop reading now. If you’d like to know why I didn’t like this one, then dear reader I’m writing this for you.

There was so much of this story that left me with way too many questions, even for a novella. I don’t want to compare this story to others, but I feel that I should considering that I’ve read many novellas that were good, just short. This wasn’t. When did it become okay to not give an m/m/f reader a story and instead just feed us written porn? If I wanted to read porn, I know where I can get it.

Katie Warren is on a vacation to ponder what to do with a recent inheritance. Arriving in the small but picturesque village of Little Marplethorpe, she decides to go to an art showing by the local artist Marcus Dane. Marcus and his lover Owen Foster also live at the house where the pieces of art are being shown. That sounds like it might be interesting, right? I thought so.

The first half of the book is about sex and minimal character introduction. No exaggeration there. What was laughable was that Katie met Marcus while looking at one of this paintings about another m/m/f scene and a couple of sentences later Marcus is taking her back to his in-house studio where Owen is waiting, in of all things – a towel. That’s the way that porn starts. Furthermore, the dialogue between the characters, along with the heroine’s inner dialogue, were clunky at best ,and after a while just became laughably ridiculous.

The storyline does make a kinda-sorta try at having at least a modicum of an interesting plot, but even that was sidelined with the supposed angst that Katie had. At this point, I’m reading just to see how much worse it could get – it did.

I really didn’t think that Owen was much into Katie. I think he went along with what Marcus wanted, because Marcus wanted Katie or at least that’s what he said. It was kinda funny because there were a couple of scenes where Marcus and Owen were getting busy while Katie was just there, I’m guessing to satisfy some voyeuristic need that Marcus had.

The whole story just came across as m/m with a female thrown in for kicks and giggles where I expected a short story with character development who had equal vested interest and –let me not fool myself– some smoking hot sex thrown in. I’ve read other novellas where that was delivered. This one, not so much.

Happy Reading Folks!
