Carrie’s Top Reads of 2013

I love the end of year book lists because somehow I always discover one or two gems I had either missed or never heard of.  So, without further ado, these are the books that resonated with me this past year.

addicted to youNew Adult

Addicted to You by Becca & Krista Ritchie – a raw, realistic and often heartbreaking look at a young couple bound by addiction and co-dependence.

Sweet by Erin McCarthy – A New Adult with characters acting their age, a heroine who owns her sexuality and an enemies to lovers story line makes this a fun quick read.

Making Faces by Amy Harmon – An angsty, emotional, beautifully written coming of age story. Central to the story is Fern, the ugly duckling, her cousin Bailey, the wise man in a degenerating body and the only boy Fern has ever loved, Ambrose, who becomes the Beast.  A simple story with a pure heart that I think most can relate to.

In the Stillness by Andrea Randall – A heroine’s descent into mental illness as her marriage disintegrates juxtaposed with scenes from the evolution, and eventual destruction, of her first love.  A story of love, loss and healing.

Contemporary Romance

The Story Guy by Mary Ann Rivers – Rivers packs an emotional wallop in 120 pgs.  A tear-jerker about a lonely story guylibrarian who meets up with an equally lonely man for kissing only every Wednesday.  Gorgeous and thought provoking writing.

Protecting What’s His by Tessa Bailey – The first in the series of Bailey’s dirty talking cop heroes.  This one is my favorite because of the wacky heroine, Ginger and her equally outspoken sister, Willa.

Lick by Kylie Scott – A rock star romance with engaging characters, low drama and a couple that you can really root for.

Killing Time by Cindy Gerard – New romantic suspense series with ex-spec ops trying to clear their name.  Gerard knows how to fit all the puzzle pieces of a great romantic suspense together and give you a great ride.

beyond controlErotica

Beyond Control by Kit Rocha – The second in the dystopian erotic series featuring the king and queen of the O’Kanes, Dallas & Lex.  Best erotic series I’ve ever read.

Uncommon Passion by Anne Calhoun – Deeply emotional story with a virginal heroine that I could get behind and a tortured broody hero that I just wanted to hug.

Historical Romance

Winterblaze by Kristen Callihan – Angsty marriage reunion story in Callihan’s Victorian paranormal world.  Action packed with such unique characters make this one of my favorite series.

No Good Duke Goes Unpunished by Sarah MacLean – Dark and emotional enemies to lovers story had me hooked from the beginning.

Urban Fantasy – If you aren’t reading these series, you need to be!magic rises

Magic Rises by Ilona Andrews- Kate and Curran (and readers!) get put through the wringer and the plot moves Kate forward towards the final showdown.

Archangel’s Legion by Nalini Singh – So emotionally satisfying to read and an all-around well written book. Nalini Singh has reinvigorated this series with this installment.

Fifth Grave Past the Light by Darynda Jones – Charley is at her snarky best. Reyes is still uber hot. Cookie and Uncle Bob are still lovable sidekicks.  Best novel of the series.
