Review: The Last Wicked Scoundrel by Lorraine Heath

last wicked scoundrelReviewed by Jen

This novella was just what I needed to break me out of my reading slump. It hooked me from the very beginning and I didn’t put it down until it was over. It’s the last story in the Scoundrels of St James series, and even though I didn’t read the earlier installments, I was able to jump right in without feeling the lack.

Winnie, the Duchess of Avendale, is only starting to reclaim her life three years after the death of her husband. The duke was a horrible man, beating her and making her feel less than nothing. Now she is nursing a tender crush on William Graves, the doctor who saved her life after one particularly bad beating. She has no idea that he feels the same way about her. Only, William thinks he doesn’t deserve her.

The good doctor helped one of Winnie’s friends fake the duke’s death, in order to drive him out of the country on a prison ship. He knew the duke might kill her one day and was trying to help, but the truth weighs on him. Now, he only allows himself one dance with her per year. One chance to be close to her, to touch her.

But his ability to keep his distance is destroyed when Winnie starts feeling haunted by her husband’s ghost. She sees glimpses of him in the shadows and catches his scent. She thinks she is losing her mind, but William knows that it could be something much worse. He allows himself to indulge his desire to be close to her in order to determine whether her evil husband has returned to seek revenge

I loved this story. Winnie’s love for William is so pure and true. And the way he sees her? It’s with such reverence. He believes her too good for him, not only for what he did to her husband, from because of his lowly past. He sees the beauty and strength in her that she can’t see in herself. When the two of them come together, it’s so sexy and satisfying. Obviously, there are bumps along the way, but I really enjoyed the journey

Very good!
