I can’t imagine that any fan of the Night Huntress series is going to be disappointed by this series finale. Up From the Grave is jam-packed with everything fans could want from a farewell. All the main characters are back and have a hand in the story. All the loose ends are tied up. It’s a fast-paced, action packed story with at least one shocking twist. The love between Cat and Bones is deep and abiding. And the ending provides the kind of happily ever after that wraps up everything in a nice shiny bow.
There is a lot happening… so much, in fact, that this almost felt like two stories in one. The first half is devoted to Madigan, the government agent who took over Don’s unit after he died. We’ve already established he is a bad egg, but we learn here that he is so very much worse than we first thought. Unfortunately, Don’s ghost doesn’t want to spill the details, so Cat and Bones have to unravel his secrets –then fight to take down Madigan’s twisted operation. The second half of the book involves that shocking twist I mentioned –and only an evil person would spoil it.
I enjoyed where Jeaniene Frost took the story. It made the whole series really come together in a cohesive way. It also really shows us who Cat and Bones have become as characters. There has definitely been growth there (especially for Cat) –but we also see that there are some things about them that will never change. Some make for tough pills to swallow and frustrated me to see. But even more frustrating was the fact that some of it was predictable. I have spent enough time with these characters that I figured out what they were doing before the big reveal. You will too. At least one of the big surprises was no surprise at all. And that took away a lot of the emotional impact.
That’s not say it was all predictable… not at all. In fact, the road to the final HEA was one I never would have predicted. It’s a little trite, but let’s face it… we want Cat and Bones to have the wonderful forever, so I think we’re all going to roll with it.
I loved how much of Denise, Charles, Ian, and Mencheres played a role. I loved the parts Vlad, Marie, Tate, and even Fabian played. The whole gang really made me feel like we were going out with one last big hurrah. It’s all so… big. I’m glad Frost decided to take the series out on a high note. Better to go out with a bang than a whimper.
