Review: A Kiss of Venom by Hailey Edwards

I really enjoyed this novella. I probably liked it more than any Araneae Nation story I have read in awhile.  The reason: it feels like the series went back to its roots. We’re taking a break from the plague and the zombie infection thing and we’re refocusing on Maven Loures’ clan.  Specifically, it’s the second chance at love story for her brother Armand and the only woman he has ever cared about.

Nicollete once loved Armand with all of her heart, but when she was caught in his bed 10 years ago, her life changed forever. Armand’s family told her she was unfit to be his wife. The heir to the throne needed to marry someone of better lineage.  When she found out she was pregnant, things got even worse. She was tossed out of her clan and Armand was told she was dead.

Now, she makes ends meet however she can, including assassination work.  Her latest target is Armand’s sister, Pascale.  But this is no simple mission.  Armand is taking an interest in her and her real identity is at risk.  Can she juggle her lies with her daughter’s safety and the feelings she still has for the child’s father?

Hailey Edwards does a great job getting me inside Nicollete’s head. I understood exactly where she was coming from and why she felt the way she did.  I was a little surprised at how quickly things progressed between her and Armand, but I did like reading their scenes together. There was good tension and believable emotions… plus just enough bedroom action to satisfy.  My only complaint was in how easily Nicollete succumbs to Armand’s proposal at the end of the book.

I liked giving the larger series arc a break and getting back to the romance.
