I am such a fan of Abigail Roux’s Cut & Run series, which is now drawing to a close. When I found out she was branching out into a spinoff featuring two of Ty’s Sidewinder buddies, I hoped the magic of Ty and Zane would live on in Nick and Kelly. I have to say that I got at least some of what I was looking for here, but not quite all of it.
The story picks up right on the heels of Touch & Geaux. Kelly is recovering from the gunshot wound he got in New Orleans and Nick has gone home with him to help him as he heals. Nick is bi-sexual. Kelly is straight. But all of a sudden, Kelly starts feeling a pull toward his old buddy. He is curious about what it would be like to be with him. So he asks Nick to kiss him. That progresses quickly to him asking for a lot more.
Here’s what I liked: This story has the same tone and feel of those C&R books I love so much. It could have fit right in as a b-plot or secondary romance in one of those books. The characters felt familiar and likeable. The sex, as always with Abigail Roux, was uber-hot and super satisfying. Win. Win. Win.
But. I had some issues with the speed in which the romantic relationship progressed. I know these two have been like brothers forever. I believe the foundation of love exists there. But Kelly went from zero to 5000 in 2 seconds flat. He was throwing himself at Nick for the entire book, begging him to take things further in every scene. He is imagining a permanent long term romance inside just a day or two. Wanting to bottom after one sexual experience… after a lifetime of being straight. I know it was a novella, but it all happened so fast, it bothered me.
I liked getting a hint at what’s happening with the Sidewinder men since they’ve been put back on duty and I enjoyed seeing Ty and Zane. I am just interested to see how this seemingly conflict-free romance between Nick and Kelly will sustain an entire series. I guess I’ll have to read Cross & Crown to find out.
