Review: Midnight Pursuits by Elle Kennedy

Midnight Pursuits is the fourth book in the Killer Instincts series by Elle Kennedy. I was introduced to this series when the third one was released but went back, read the first two and now it is up there as one of my favorites.   Ms. Kennedy writes some bad ass women who are also seriously damaged and I’m loving it. This instalment surrounds the rookie from Jim Morgan’s team Ethan Hayes, and the master thief from Noelle’s team, Juliet Mason.  After the teasing that Juliet dished out towards Ethan in Midnight Games, the sexual tension between the two was obvious but the relationship that built between them was even more appealing.

Ethan is the youngest and newest member of Jim’s team earning him the nickname of rookie.  He had a perfectly normal childhood, in deep contrast to the childhood that Juliet had and the wistful way she listens to him talk about his parents makes you sad for her.  There is one scene where she breaks into a bakery to steal him cookies to remind him of his mother and that was too cute. In previous instalments Ethan seemed laid back and sweet, but damn the man has an alpha side!   While house sitting for Trevor and Isabel when they head for their honeymoon, Ethan intercepts a call from an injured Juliet and rushes to help her.

Juliet is one of Noelle’s most heartless team members and doesn’t care who she steps on to achieve her goal.  At least on the surface.  After she is severely injured during a deeply personal mission, Juliet has no choice but to let Ethan help her out.  When they uncover a conspiracy that shows that others, including a 15 year old girl, are in danger Ethan cannot turn a blind eye.  Juliet is determined to see her mission through but grudgingly follows Ethan, telling herself that she’s only doing it so that she can move on to bigger fish.

I love strong female characters in my books, but I also like a lot of emotion.  Juliet offered both.  There is no doubt that she is ruthless and vicious but that kind of made me love her even more.  She is unapologetic about the way she dispatches with the assassin that killed her brother, but the way she handles Anastacia shows her sweet side as well.  Ethan accepts both sides of her and doesn’t try to change her which just increased his appeal.

As Juliet and Ethan get closer to bringing down the person that orchestrated the hit that killed her brother, things between them heat up.  But we also get to see more of Noelle, D and Jim and man I cannot wait for Noelle’s book.  I just know without a doubt that this one is going to make me cry even more than Abby’s did.  There are still a few team members we have heard of but haven’t seen yet so I’m keeping my fingers crossed this is one series that keeps going!
