Review: Sixth Grave on the Edge by Darynda Jones

sixth graveReviewed by Jen

I loved 99% of this book.  It’s funny and irreverent.  The world-building is awesome. The characters are engaging.  And the plot is completely entertaining.  It was a great book. But that one percent that didn’t work for me was pretty significant. (I’ll get to that in a minute.)

If you haven’t read the previous books in this series, stop here.  You need to start with First Grave on the Right.  This review will reference spoilers from the previous books.

Like all readers, I opened the book, excited to find out whether Charley was going to accept Reyes’ proposal.  Well, she’s considering it, but it’s with her typical levity.  After all, she has other important things to think about too: like coffee… the naked ghost in her jeep… Cookie’s love life… and the backstory on Mr. Wong.  This means the answer doesn’t come with the swiftness you might hope.  It also means there is plenty going on to keep up the pace.

As always, Charley’s work as a PI plays a part in the story.  And as always, she is working one mundane case and one supernatural case at the same time. Only here, her PI case is the supernatural investigation –and the regular bad-guy caper involves her personal life.  In her paid case, a man is asking her to find the demon who he sold his soul to, so he can get it back.  At the same time, she is trying to track down a woman in witness protection because some goons have threatened to go after Charley’s loved ones if she doesn’t.  All this, while she tries to learn more about what it really means to be the grim reaper and to understand the prophecies that surround her and Reyes.

It’s a busy time.  So busy you might be worried that we might miss out on some of the deliciousness that is Reyes Farrow.  Fear not.  He gets naked.  Feel free to rejoice.

Unfortunately, it’s an element of the story involving Reyes that makes up that pesky 1% I told you about.  You see, Darynda Jones tackles a rather hairy prophecy involving him –and it, well, it failed. (At least, for this reader.)  I re-read the scene in question four times and I still don’t entirely understand what happened.  And it’s pretty important. So that blows.

But remember, 99% is pretty darn spectacular.  There are major arc developments and another big ole’ hairy shocker of an ending.  I’ll give Darynda her due. She always leaves me wanting more.  If you’re not reading this series, you should be. It will make you laugh; it will light your fire; and it will keep you guessing until the very end.

  20. I have to say I was a bit confused at the scene in question too but it didn’t bother me like you. I just chalked it up to it being another mystery that will be better explained later as so many other things in this series. LOVED this installment though. And your “Fear not. He gets naked. Feel free to rejoice.” made me spit out my water lol.

  34. I love this series!!! It has been getting better and better since book one. I love the quirkyness of Charley and the chemistry with the son of Satan Reyes. Whom is hunkalious! This series is amazing with humor, mystery and sexiness. I hope it never ends. 🙂 This is a must read! Great Review!!!

  35. I adore this series, and am torn between saving this book for my holiday in three weeks or devouring this weekend…. Decisions, decisions….

  36. Suzan Lacey says:

I love this series and I’m just starting this book now! I’ll have to see what the prophecy is but I’m sure whatever it is Reyes will refuse to be defined by it and will strike out to make his own fate as he’s already done since first seeing Charley! He can beat any prophecy if he wants to (I hope!).

  37. Holly Compiano says:

Love Charlie Davidson, Reyes and the gang! Can’t wAit to start reading #6!! I ordered a copy online so…..SADLY not here yet !!!! ;(

  38. Can wait to start the newest Charley & Reyes ! I wish these books were written faster, I am finished all too soon & always have to do a re-read.

  39. Shy@Doctor's Notes says:

I am currently listening to the audio of this one and loving it. I love this series a lot and can’t wait to see what Charley gets herself into this time.

  40. I will take a Charley/Reyes book – flaws and all – over a lot of the drivel I’ve read lately. Charley is a riot and her characters are fun! I hope whatever the problem is, it’s resolved in book 7 (Come on, October!) because, while I have to wait a few days to get #6thGrave, I am already anxious for the next one!

  41. I love this series. I splurged and ordered a signed copy back in December and am waiting with bated breath to get my hands on Reyes 🙂
