Review: Baiting the Maid of Honor by Tessa Bailey

If you’ve been reading my reviews, you know how much I love Tessa Bailey’s writing (especially her dirty talking heroes).  As soon as I saw Bailey’s name come up as one of the authors involved, I requested the whole series.  I am sooo glad I did because she does not disappoint.  This is the second book in the Wedding Dare series.  The stories seem to run concurrently and are interwoven, but I think it would be fine as a standalone.

The only reason Reed Lawson took time off from his intense job as a SWAT team commander to attend a fussy wedding is because of his loyalty to the groom, one of his oldest friends.  He figured he could find a place at the resort he could hide out at until the wedding day when he comes across Julie Piper.

Julie is a tried and true southern/sorority girl.  She’s been raised to be the perfect hostess, a charming companion and dutiful daughter.  Julie is the type of girl that never lets anyone see anything but relentless cheer.

Julie is the exact opposite of Reed: soft to his hard, perky to his gruff.  By all accounts, they shouldn’t be attracted to each other, but there is no denying their sexual chemistry.  Reed flips all of Julie’s switches – some she had no idea she had.  The deliciously filthy things that come of Reed’s mouth let Julie tap into her inner bad girl and allow her to let someone else be in control for a while.

It’s during the moments of quiet, after lovemaking, when personal defenses are low, that Julie and Reed discover a hidden depth to each other.  Julie is still caught up in her feelings and responsibilities surrounding her mother’s death.  Reed is totally emotionally closed off due to a physically abusive childhood.  There’s a fantastic push and pull between these two opposites that totally work.  My only sadness was that the book was too short.

Bailey has managed to keep me enthralled reading a trope I usually don’t care for (opposites attract), with a heroine I usually can’t stand (a super sweet girl) but mixed it with some raw and powerful sexual tension and came up with an incredibly satisfying read.  Fair warning though…you might want a fan or a mister for those love scenes – they’re that good.  Enjoy!
