Review: Safe by Shara Azod and RaeLynn Blue

safeReviewed by Shelly

I’ve had this story in my ever increasing stack of books to read and I finally bit the bullet. I’ve read other books by Azod and have been impressed enough to keep reading and hoping for that great IR story that leaves me wowed. I didn’t find it in this novella. The story itself was okay but the spelling errors, and there were many, kept pulling me from the story and interrupting the flow, thereby decreasing whatever enjoyment I might find.

Briony Beauchamp wakes up in the hospital after the beating that her husband, Bobby Ray, has just given her. Bobby Ray’s brother, Quentin, is an FBI agent and has been in love with his brother’s wife since they married 3 years ago. Quentin is the only family who’s with Briony in the hospital when she wakes up and seeing her in that state puts him over the edge to finally give Bobby Ray the beat down he clearly deserves. Too bad Bobby Ray’s new friends got to him first and made Briony a widow. But Quentin will take this new arrangement because he now has the chance to make Briony his. The question is, can Quentin protect Briony from harm while making her believe that they have a future?

This could have been such an incredibly good book. I’ve rarely been disappointed with two authors telling a story. They’re usually a full length novel and the plot well developed, not in this case though. This novella left so much open. I see many other reviews that are very complimentary, but to me it felt rushed and there were a lot of loose ends that were not tied up.

Quentin is the proverbial alpha male, but in this case it’s okay because he was really out to protect Briony, but only after her husband died. I wondered why he wasn’t suspicious of Bobby Ray prior to his death, because he was clearly suspicious of his shenanigans and tomfoolery. I also had some trouble with understanding Quentin’s relationship with his partner Tomas. For their working relationship, being many years old, Quentin didn’t know Tomas as well as Tomas seemed to know Quentin. That left me questioning Quentin’s character a bit – did he only pay attention to what he wanted to see and not take into consideration anyone else’s feeling or opinions? He did that with Briony multiple times but between the sex and the sex (there’s a lot) that didn’t seem to bother Briony too much.

Speaking of Briony, I didn’t really get a sense for her other than she didn’t give up on her marriage vows when her husband had and she enjoyed the bedroom antics with Quentin. Yes, she’s strong mentally, but I didn’t like or dislike her because I didn’t think she had much of a voice. The POV was Quentin’s and as he’s so gung-ho on getting Briony he seemed to bulldoze over her when she threw up any objections to the speed of their relationship.

And then there’s the end that happened so quickly, had I blinked I would have missed it. The epilogue is the introduction of Tomas’s story but I can’t seem to find that story 5 years after this was written.

Happy Reading Folks!
