Review: Dangerous Territory by Emmy Curtis

I was in the mood for a military man story when the invite to review this novella popped into my inbox.  It piqued my interested because the heroine was in the war zone with the hero.  I’m happy to say I’ve found a new series to follow.

Grace Grainger has just come back from a distressing stint as an embedded journalist in Afghanistan.  Just before she was set to come home, a soldier she had become close friends with was killed by an IED. Since she’s only stateside for a few weeks, Grace holes up at the Four Seasons to deal with her grief before moving on to the next assignment.   Lucky for her, a perfect distraction sidles up to the bar.

Josh Travers is set to redeploy to Afghanistan in a few days.  Josh always stays at a hotel for the few days prior to deployment to get some space from well-meaning family and start transitioning his mind to his job.  He didn’t intend to pick up the pretty woman at the hotel bar, but he couldn’t stand the sadness in her eyes.  For just the one night, they take comfort in the way only sexy times can bring.

Fast forward 3 years and Grace is back in country with another unit.  Everything is moving along until the convoy she’s in is attacked.  She gets separated from the group and is forced to hole up in a cave until help arrives.  Lo and behold it’s her sexy one night stand that she’s fantasized about for the last 3 years to the rescue.   Josh is just as shocked to see Grace… and dismayed to find out she’s a journalist.  Reconnecting with Grace is a big no-no by military standards but with guns and bombs going off around them, it’s too hard for Josh to resist the pull.

This is another quick and sexy prequel story.  Grace and Josh’s relationship was ok. Of course, it suffers because of the book length but there’s enough to keep interest.  Where the author really excelled was the minor action plot.  For being such a short book, the scenes are well paced and exciting.  She seems to have proper knowledge of military protocol, which I appreciate.  I’m really looking forward to the next book in the series featuring a tough as nails soldier heroine!
