Review: For Her Spy Only by Robyn DeHart

for her spy onlyReviewed by Shelly

The 2nd novella in Robyn DeHart’s Masquerading Mistresses is a fun follow up to Remy and Emma’s story. This is a standalone, though, so there’s no need to have read the first one, but you’ll have missed out on a bit of happiness if you don’t. Like Remy and Emma’s story, this installment has the couple with a clandestine meeting a few years earlier – in this case it’s 6 years earlier. After being left at the alter, Winifred Wilmington just wants to get away. Once she’s on her way though, her carriage breaks down and she and her maid, Polly, are stuck with no hopes of a rescue until Alistair happens by. Alistair Devlin, Marquess of Coventry, is a loner and he likes it that way. Rumors abound that he killed his wife, but that’s not the whole story, and he’s not in the least interested in swaying anyone’s opinion of him.

After their initial nights together, Winifred and Alistair go their separate ways – she moves on and marries and he continues his business with the Crown as a spy. Hoping to decode a journal and solve a mystery Alistair one day shows up on Winifred’s doorstep asking to speak to her husband. He’s completely surprised that Winifred is now a widow and has very little to speak with him about.

There are a lot of misunderstandings between these two because both are holding for dear life to their secrets. Winifred is unsure of Alistair’s affection and his overall purpose; Alistair’s can’t get past his childhood and his dead wife to see the gifts that Winifred offers.

I’ve read a fair amount of novellas and it’s hard to get a satisfying story in less than 100 pages. I didn’t get a full story here but I did get a relatively satisfying one. Yes, I would have liked for this to be longer and find out more about Winifred and Alistair. However, the story was engaging and I enjoyed what I got.

There’s a lot of story to tell in a few words and DeHart does a good job of it. The end happened too quickly for me and Winifred easy acceptance of Alistair apology and love was way too convenient for me but other than that – this is a good addition to the series.

Happy Reading folks!
