Tessa Bailey is back with her dirty talking alpha heroes! This time she pulls in several characters from previous books (Ruby and Troy from His Risk to Take and Derek from Protecting What’s His) and pushes this first book in a new series into a really interesting direction.
Seraphina Newsome is on a mission. The ER nurse turned cop is attempting to avenge her brother’s death by going undercover as a bar waitress for a crime lord in order to obtain incriminating evidence in the form of a ledger. Sera, as a rookie cop, has the deck stacked against her going into the unsanctioned operation with no support, but she just can’t let the man who killed her brother get off so easy.
Bowen Driscoll is no stranger to the underworld. All Bowen has known his entire life is the way of the streets, growing up as the son of South Brooklyn’s crime boss. He had once hoped that there might have been some kind of hope for him, but that glimmer was snuffed out when his father was sent to prison and Bowen had to pick up the mantle. The universe decides to give Bowen another chance when he is asked by Sera’s uncle, the police commissioner, to quietly be her backup. At first, he balks but then sees a picture of a youthful naive girl and the same protective instincts that guarded his sister, Ruby, all those years, come roaring back to the surface.
Bowen manages to convince his rival, Hogan, to let him “have” Ruby for a week. Sera is thrown off by an intense and immediate attraction to the gruff and handsome man; that is, until she learns his name. She decides to go along with Bowen because she thinks she can use Bowen and get the goods on Hogan. In a short amount of time, Sera learns about the man and not the criminal while Bowen is feverishly trying everything he can to keep Sera safe from the dangers that are coming from all sides.
Sera and Bowen are very yin and yang. She is kind, gentle and virginal. He is hot-tempered, hard and violent. On the surface, it’s a classic good girl/bad boy set up, but they share common ground in their loneliness. After her parent’s deaths, Sera was shipped off to boarding school, rarely coming home. Bowen’s mother took off early and his father left him to fend for himself. They both enjoyed their siblings but there were secrets that came between. Sera and Bowen found their missing pieces in each other – she was able to soothe him while he was able give her the support she needed to stand on her own.
Yes, there is insta-lust and insta-love but the author manages to make it work – maybe it’s because of the smoking hot sex scenes that are sure to cause a few blushes. Bailey is known for her dirty talkers and Bowen definitely brings the heat. I liked to watch Sera slowly bring him to his knees (figuratively and literally). The suspense part of the book is fairly predictable but where it left the pair was totally not! I am so intrigued with the set-up of the series and the coming books. Do you fancy a surly band of misfits?
I love that the author always manages to weave in old characters but not in a way that confuses a new reader. I’d recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a smoking hot love story with an overprotective bad boy who soothes his savage beast with a tenacious good girl all while trying to right wrongs. Can’t wait for the next book!
