Every time I read a new book in the series, it leaves me wanting more. Sometimes, it’s because I’m left crying and broken-hearted; other times, I am just dying to find out what happens next. This time, it was because there’s this great, fast paced story that was just over too soon. It felt short, but that may be because (A) it ended on a bit of a cliffhanger and (B) there was a six chapter short story that filled out the last 40 pages or so of my ebook.
The story picks up not long after the end of Night Blade. Kit is getting to a better place after the horrible events of book two. She and Damon are finally getting their magic back, and while there are some growing pains, it is absolutely fantastic reading. JC Daniels has really made me fall in love with this pairing and I loved watching them make their way back to each other. It’s got some good emotional moments and some really good sex.
In the meantime, Kit’s hard at work on a case with her old flame Justin. And if you’re worrying about a love triangle, don’t. It’s not that kind of book. It is, however, a fast paced story, chock-full of violence, character development, and emotional resonance. The mystery arc got a little complicated at times; you have to pay attention. There are a fair number of characters, many of which we were introduced to in previous installments. It’s definitely not lazy-reading. But that is part of what makes it fly by and so hard to put down.
What is missing, though, in many ways is the Kit we met in Blade Song. That is, of course, in part due to what she endured in Broken Blade, but not entirely. I miss her connection to weapons. It was such a big part of her, as was her history with her grandmother and her race of people. Now, each warrants just a line or two. Don’t get me wrong, I love the attention on Kit’s relationship with Damon and her friendship with Justin and her general ass-kicking. I just feel the lack of the other stuff. Maybe, hopefully, they will come back in a bigger way in the coming books.
Speaking of the coming books, well, they can’t get here soon enough. Kit rocks my socks off and I can’t get enough of her and Damon. (*sigh*) Only another year to go.
