This is one in Kayla Perrin’s ‘Love and Fire’ series and is centered on a team of firefighters. There’s a little bit of difference with the hero’s name that threw me for a small loop – the blurb reads Tyler Johansen but within ARC that I was provided, the hero’s name is Tyler McKenzie – this didn’t take away from the story though.
Tyler is one of the firefighters featured in the calendar that’s raising money for one of the local charities. Nya Lowe works at the photography studio that put together the calendar. During a fundraiser, Nya’s ex-boyfriend shows up with his new girl friend and acting out of character Nya kisses Tyler while pretending that he’s her new ‘hot’ boyfriend. Along the way, Nya and Tyler pretend to be each other’s significant other when the need arises. Can these two find their way to happiness? I’ve not read any of the other installments in the series, but I’m willing to find out.
Nya’s promise to herself is all about self-improvement; she’s on a kick to give up men and sex because in the past her relationships have too quickly gone to sex and her last boyfriend shattered her self-confidence and self-awareness. One of the funniest scenes was Nya’s first citing of her ex-boyfriend and the ‘co-star’ of his movie – Nya’s reactions were laugh out loud funny and was the beginning of me liking her. Nya did what many of us might have done; she was just able to get away smooching on a handsome, single firefighter.
I’m not usually a fan of the pretend boyfriend/girlfriend theme but Perrin was able to make a believer out of me. I found it interesting the way the plot developed – I thought some of it was kind of hokey but it was certainly entertaining and funny. Working with her best friend, Sabrina, in the photography studio as the person who does everything but take the pictures Nya had a good head on her shoulders. Unfortunately for her, her personal life is not as organized and functional as her business life. There’s a lot I can say about Nya’s work – mainly that she seems to be too old to not have made it further professionally, but we’re all waylaid by one thing or another and for Nya her personal life seemed to have taken up a lot of her time.
I liked Tyler more than I expected. I expected alpha all the way but he turned out to be just a nice guy who has his share of bad relationships and wanted to find his forever girl. I liked that he was a well-rounded guy with friends and family. There’s not much action or drama between these two; there’s a nice amount of relationship development and some back and forth from Nya. I felt for Tyler with some of that back and forth, because even I, as the reader, was a tad put off by Nya at times. The progression of the romance worked and even the ending pleased me.
Happy Reading folks!
