What a Woman Gets is the third book in the Manley Maid’s series by Judi Fennell. I haven’t read the other books in the series but it definitely didn’t impact my enjoyment of it and I didn’t feel like I was missing a huge plot or anything – it was self-explanatory. If you aren’t familiar with these books, the general premise is that three brothers lost a bet to their sister in a poker game. Each brother has to act as a maid for a month to honor their bet. In this installment it is Liam’s turn to pay up and he finds himself cleaning the house of rich socialite Cassidy. After being burned by a woman “just like her”, Liam is determined to ignore their sizzling chemistry and get his job done. When Cassidy’s dad cuts her off, she is on her own for the first time and Liam offers to let her stay at his house – as his maid.
Liam Manley is a successful business owner. Having been stung by a rich, snobby woman in the past, Liam immediately decides that despite how hot Cassidy is, he is not interested. Despite the fact that he has this past, Liam came off as a bit of an ass at first. Thankfully he managed to turn it around and by the end of the book, I loved him.
Cassidy Davenport has always relied on her daddy’s money to get by in life. She has never done mundane things like grocery shopping and when she stands up to her dad and refuses to marry the man of his choosing, he cuts her cards off, kicks her out of her apartment and she is left with nothing. Liam steps up and offers to let her crash with him but she must act as his maid to pay the way.
I HATE helpless heroines but despite the whole rich girl, socialite thing, Cassidy wants to be independent and she wants to follow her passion of restoring furniture in to art. After meeting a terminally ill child she realizes that she wants more out of her life and I admired that. Don’t get me wrong, she has a steep learning curve when she first gets cut off, but she didn’t sit around and whine and wait for Liam to rescue her which I really liked.
This couple had some hot chemistry from the get-go but it took me a bit to warm up to Liam, so at first I wasn’t really feeling these two as a couple. I know he got burned, but that’s no reason to be a dick to her – which he was. As he got to know her, he realized that she’s nothing like the woman who burned him and he is there for her in a lot of ways. When her dad threatens him and his sister, Liam doesn’t back down, and he seems to really want to help her to get her business off the ground.
This wasn’t one of those fast-paced, action books, so if you are looking for that you will be disappointed. It was however, a sweet story told very well, with a couple you come to root for. I really enjoyed the writing and I am going to go back and read the first two books. Overall it was a great read and I highly recommend it.
