Review: Love After All by Jaci Burton

Love After All is the fourth book in the Hope series by Jaci Burton and when I heard who was going to be paired up, I was a tiny bit sceptical that this would work.  Chelsea is a math teacher who likes lists, including one that has all the qualities she expects in her “perfect’ man, and Bash is none of those things.  Despite my hesitation, I have to admit it really worked for me.

Chelsea Gardner has been unlucky in love too many times to count.  She has a career that she loves, a nice apartment and a wardrobe that makes all her friends jealous.  Her closest friends have been getting married and while Chelsea is really happy for all of them, she can’t help but want what they have.  In order to ensure she finds a man who she can have forever with, she compiles a list of the qualities he must have.

Sebastian (Bash) Palmer is the owner of the No Hope At All Bar and that bar is his wife and baby.  He sticks only to casual relationships, after a divorce that left him jaded about love and marriage.  His latest fling parades into his bar one night dropping a poor little dog on him saying she only got it because he liked dogs, and that’s how this big, gruff man ends up with a Chihuahua.

There is some sizzling chemistry between Bash and Chelsea, but of course she refuses to acknowledge it.  He meets none of the criteria on her list and in her mind, it’s better to stick to only men that meet her ridiculous standards.  If I had one complaint about this book it would be this list.  First it’s not really believable that a grown, educated woman would believe there is such a thing as the “perfect” man.  Second is the number of times this list is mentioned throughout the book.  That part drove me slightly batty.  Thankfully I was able to get over this and still enjoy the book.

Bash agrees to help Chelsea find Mr. Perfect but she is unable to get him out of her mind.  She is incredibly attracted to him and he offers her sex with no strings, but she is hesitant to cross that line convinced if she’s spending time with Mr. Wrong she’s going to miss Mr. Right.  After meeting a man who meets just about all of her criteria there’s just one catch – zero chemistry.  All she can think about is Bash.  She decides she needs to have sex with Bash, get the attraction out of her system, and then resume her search.  Bash is of course more than willing to help her with this mission and that’s when things get fun.

Despite believing Bash is all wrong for her, Chelsea starts to realize that maybe her list isn’t so important after all.  The two have a great time together and start spending more and more time doing things that neither expected the other to enjoy.  I’m not going to spoil it for people who haven’t read it but of course one of them screws things up, bringing in the inevitable conflict.

Overall, I found this one to be a really sweet installment in the series and Bash and Chelsea worked way beyond my expectations.  The gang was all here which was great and we got updates on where they are all at, plus we got a peek at who the next couple in the series is going to be.  Cannot wait to see the next McCormack brother meet his match!
