Review: Misery’s Way by JC Daniels

There are actually two short novellas inside this ebook. Both are in the Kit’s Colbana world, but only one features Kit as the narrator and that one was previously released.

“Misery’s Way” takes place after the events of Edged Blade and is actually told from the POV of a pain eater and healer named Frankie. She isn’t human and she thrives on the misery of others. But she also feels the need to fix that pain. So she travels around as a faith healer, doing enough to make a difference, but nothing so flashy as to bring too much attention. When Kit and Justin walk into her tent, she senses all the pain Kit carries around and it calls to her. What happens next makes this story an absolute must read for fans of the series.

I’m not sure how meaningful this will be to new readers. For those of us reading from Blade Song on through, it’s really good stuff. It’s relevant to the larger story arc and though you may get what you need from the next novel, do yourself a favor and don’t skip it. I was really intrigued by Frankie and her right hand man, Saleel. I hope to see more of them in future books, either inside another Kit installment or in their own book.

This short story is only about 40 pages and it really left me wanting more.

“Bladed Magic” is a prequel from Kit’s POV that shows us her first meeting with Justin. At this point, she is still working at TJ’s bar and Justin blows into town working case for her boss. But it’s his return visit that ends up changing her life. He senses something in her that isn’t content leading a quiet life. He brings her into his quest to track a child predator, and in doing so, changes her life forever.

I really enjoyed this story too. In the novels, we have seen flashes of Kit’s vulnerability, but here it dominates over her strength. It’s cool to see her recognize her power and realize the good it can do. I also really liked Justin here. He is so charming! And while I am 100% Team Damon, the chemistry between these two is undeniable.

This short is in the ballpark of 50 pages, and worth reading if you didn’t pick it up in its initial release. Totally worth $.99.
