I’ve enjoyed this author’s writing in the past. I read the first two in Kelly Jamieson’s ‘Rule of Three’ series and it’s only because of my enjoyment with that writing that I decided to give this one a go. But there’s something about this one that just didn’t do anything for me. If anything, the heroine aggravated me to no end.
What I didn’t realize when reading the blurb was that the heroine was a couple years out of college which isn’t so bad but the NA category is not one of my favorites and I really tend to stay clear of the ‘millionaire’ stories. That being said, if the story is engaging and the characters are people I can empathize with, I’ll get over my preconceived notions. Color me judgmental. Now that being said – I’ll tell you what I thought about Lexi Mannis and Mac Northrop.
I’m not sure I understand how and when Lexi fell in love with Mac. As her stand-in date for any given social function, Mac’s gone out with Lexi a lot of the last few years (since their college days). There’s nothing about him that was new to her. He was the same Mac from their first meeting to the day she declared her feelings for him. Having met in college he wasn’t the most fashionable guy around, but he wasn’t a troll either. And I really didn’t see anything different except their one night of drinking that led to them sleeping together. By the way, that one night of drinking wasn’t all that impressive from an alcohol consumption standpoint.
On the other hand, Mac said he was always in love with Lexi. I didn’t see what he saw in her either because she was really selfish and rather clueless, and not even in a convincingly cute way. There’s nothing about this story that made it stand out from any other friends to lovers story and for me that made it ‘meh’. Last, I find it next to impossible to empathize with any heroine/hero who takes a year off after college for the sole purpose of traveling and who has no clue about living outside of her upper middle class upbringing bubble.
Happy Reading Folks!
