This series continues to deliver everything I want in paranormal romance. Even after eight installments, it is still engaging, exciting, and emotional. I read this book all in one sitting, then got mad at myself for my inability to savor it like it truly deserves. Nalini Singh completely satisfies with Nassir’s story, giving us the answers we’ve been waiting for, and finally allowing us to know this man who has been such a mystery all this time.
Nassir is simply a wonderful character. He is more than 600 years old, but there is still this …not innocence, but… lack of artifice to him. Unlike so many other long-lived entities in the series, he is not jaded. He’s not naive, but he is pure in a way. He is also sexy, intelligent, practical, honorable, and loyal to those he considers family. Now he finally considers himself grown and is looking for a mate.
Enter Andromeda. She is a scholar Raphael has tasked Nassir to work with in order to track where the Archangel Alexander sleeps. She is also the granddaughter of Charisemnon, one the most powerful and most twisted members of the Cadre. Andromeda is devoted to her calling, but an old blood debt to her family is about to come due. Saving Alexander from the plotting of a murderous Lijuan is likely one of the last good things she can do before she must return to her grandfather’s clutches. Falling is love is the furthest thing from her mind.
The chemistry between these two is powerful and immediate. Nassir knows Andi is his mate, but the mission to save Alexander must come first. Not only that, but there’s Andi’s pesky vow of chastity to contend with.
There’s a lot going on, as you can always expect in these books. The romance is fantastic, but it’s only part of the bigger picture happening with the Cascade. We get to spend some time with Elena and Raphael, which is awesome, but there is also big stuff happening with our beloved Bluebell –and with angel politics. The pacing makes the book fly by.
Singh does such a good job crafting her characters, not just the ones we love, but the villains as well. They are multi-dimensional and fascinating. The world-building continues to expand, making the story richer, pulling me in deeper and deeper. And then, of course, is the big reveal on exactly what Nassir is. It takes some time for it all to unravel, but by the end of the book, you’ll understand everything and root for him all the more.
The story is exciting. The romance is satisfying. And I’m already excited for the next book. It can’t come soon enough.
