Review: Falling In by Lydia Michaels

falling inReviewed by Jaimie

I am having so much luck going back and reading books that have been sitting on my TBR pile for a while, and this one is no different.  Falling In is the first book in the Surrender Trilogy by Lydia Michaels, and man, this was an amazing book.  I have to say it is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time, and I cannot wait to dive into the other two!!

Evelyn Keats (Scout) has lived a life that most people would find hard to imagine.  Growing up homeless with a drug addict for a mother, Scout is determined that she will not wind up another Jane Doe, dead from the elements.  Landing a job at the Patras Hotel is the first step towards security.  While cleaning one of the executive suites, Scout accidentally knocks important business papers off the desk and is caught by the hotel owner.

Lucian Patras has lived the complete opposite life that Evelyn has.  Growing up in a world of privilege has taught him that everything and everyone has a price if you want it bad enough – and he wants Evelyn.  He proposes that she spend some time as his companion, attending events with him and, of course, sharing his bed.  When she doesn’t immediately jump at the opportunity, Lucian can’t help but to become even more intrigued with Evelyn.

Desperate to get her and her mother out of the situation they are in, Evelyn convinces herself that she can pull this off for a couple of weeks while saving as much money as possible.  She believes that Lucian will tire of her quickly, so she wants to make the most of it.  Lucian has no idea what Evelyn has been through, nor what she will have to sacrifice in order to fulfill her part of the deal, and when he learns the truth he is equally horrified and impressed.

While Lucian starts out simply desiring Evelyn, he cannot help but fall in love with her, as he finds out more about her and her past.  He does not hesitate to freely tell her he loves her, but she will not tell him that in return.  The only person she has ever loved is her mother, and Pearl has treated her like a piece of garbage.  In her mind, love is a weapon, and she refuses to hand him the gun.

This story is equal parts sweet, sad and sexy, and it takes you through an emotional journey.  Just as I was thinking it would be great to hear the story from Lucian’s point of view as well, Ms. Michaels switched to his account.  She goes back and forth periodically, which I really liked.

Lucian has his faults, no doubt.  He is very domineering and bossy, but it never goes over the top.  At times, I admit Evelyn’s inner dialogue became a little tiring, and her refusal to tell Lucian she loves him was frustrating. Thankfully, this did not take away from my enjoyment of the story and/or the characters.

This is the first book in the trilogy, and I cannot wait to get in to the next one.  Overall this book was fantastic.  I loved the hero and heroine, the story was emotionally charged with some humor here and there to break it up, and there was some smoking hot sex scenes as well.  I am definitely a Ms. Michaels fan and hopefully the remaining books are just as good!

You’re right, this is a very good book. I expected Lucian to be a bit of a douche but he’s so far from that. He uses his powers for good not evil 🙂

  2. Cool – am going through latest set of reviews looking for some new A-rated reads for holiday. Will pick this one up 🙂
