Review: Forgotten Secrets by Robin Perini

forgotten secretsReviewed by Jaimie

Forgotten Secrets is the first book in the Singing River Legacy series by new-to-me author Robin Perini. While the romance part of the book was secondary, I really enjoy a good thriller when it’s done properly and this one definitely was.

Riley Lambert became an FBI Profiler after witnessing her sister’s kidnapping when she was just ten years old, and by all accounts she’s one of the best. Her job is her life and finding out what happened to her sister has become an obsession. After a case ends badly, Riley is ordered to rest and take a breather. Her boss even goes so far as to block her access to the FBI database so she can’t work her sister’s case in the meantime.

Thayne Blackwood is the acting Deputy Sheriff in Singing River, Wyoming, and he considers this a brief stop while he fills in for his sick father. Anxious to get back to his SEAL team, he is biding his time until his dad can resume his duty. While on call one night, he gets a frantic phone call from his sister, a doctor in town, and before he has time to find out what’s going in he hears her yell “No! Please don’t hurt her” and the line goes dead. Thayne races to his sister’s office but when he gets there she’s gone and the only witness is his grandmother who suffers from Alzheimer’s. Desperate to find his kidnapped sister he reaches out to Riley for help.

Riley visited the town of Singing River a year earlier looking for clues in her sister’s disappearance. During her time there, Riley and Thayne hooked up for a steamy weekend together. Since then they continued to talk on the phone almost every night, but they hadn’t seen each other since. When they see each other again it’s clear that the spark is still there, but Riley wants to maintain her distance in order to focus on the case. Determined to make sure she realizes how good they are together after the case is done, Thayne respects her wishes while still keeping her close.

Like I said the romance part is secondary to the story but its almost a good thing that it is, because the story has a lot of moving parts. It’s fast paced and there are many twists to keep you on your toes.

Riley’s family, particularly her mother, blames her for her sister’s kidnapping and has treated her like shit ever since. There are some really emotional moments for Riley in the story and seeing the way Thayne was there for her during it was really touching and sweet.

There were some really heart breaking moments in the story and not just relating to Riley. There is one part near the end that made me very emotional and I love when a book can bring that out in me.

Overall this was a really great book. You can’t help but root for Riley and Thayne. You don’t have time to get bored because the story moves at a crazy pace and there are so many twists to keep up with. There are also some really touching and emotional parts. I cannot wait to read more in this series.
