Review: Showing Him the Ropes by Christa Tomlinson

I generally enjoy a burly, strong, stoic hero and not only did I find one here, it’s in context of a closeted pro-wrestler who is finally about to find love.

Chance is has built his life around his career in the ring. He doesn’t have the time or inclination to find a relationship –and rarely even picks up a one-night stand on the road. Coming out could be disastrous for his reputation and it’s never been worth the risk. Until Devin enters the picture.

Devin is a young upstart wrestler who has been assigned Chance as a mentor. The gorgeous redhead wastes no time letting Chance know he’s been a fan his whole life –and that he’s interested in more than just training with the older man. Chance resists at first. He’s worried that Devin thinks to use him to help his career. He’s worried that the rookie might want more than he can give. And, of course, he’s worried about what would happen if anyone learned the truth.

As a result, a lot of good stuff is happening here. On top of this 6-foot-5 older, gruff, mountain of a hero (who I loved) — we’ve also got a forbidden romance (which I also love) and gobs of fantastic sexual tension. Love. Love. Love.

Getting peek inside the inner workings of the wrestling biz is cool. There are a handful of secondary characters with just enough page time to let me envision them with their own stories in the future. But our two heroes are what make this story sing. I really like that despite Chance’s reticence, he doesn’t push back on Devin to the point where I felt like he was a jerk. He stood up when it counted and I believed not only in the physical attraction between these two (which was uber-hot, BTW) but their emotional connection as well.

This felt a little longer than a novella, but on the short side for a full length book, but it felt just the right length to tell the story. I will admit I was expecting just one more splash of conflict at the end. But overall, I found this book to be both engaging and satisfying. This is my first from Christa Tomlinson, but I would read her again.
