Review: Billionaire on the Loose by Jessica Clare

billionaire-on-the-looseReviewed by Jaimie

Billionaire on the Loose is the latest book in the Billionaires and Bridesmaids series by Jessica Clare. The books in this series all take place around the same time so there were some things going on that we had seen in the earlier books as well. This installment revolves around Loch, who is related to Griffin and Princess Alex from earlier installments, and Gretchen’s techie friend Taylor. While these types of stories are predictable, that’s one of the things I like about them.

Taylor lives her life behind a computer and until recently that was fine by her. Lately she’s not finding the enjoyment that she used to when she plays her online games and works her technical support job from the comfort of her home. Part of the reason is that she has an online stage 4 clinger that threatens suicide if she’s away from the computer for more than 5 minutes.

Loch is sixth in line for the throne in his country Bellissime, but with so many people ahead of him he never gave it much thought. He lives his life playing polo, hanging out with his friends and living the free life. However, when the people start revolting because his cousin Princess Alex married an American, and another cousin has a major scandal, things suddenly take a turn. As one of the most popular royals, the people want him to take the throne when the Queen steps down. To get him out of the minds of the people, Loch is sent to America for a year or two while the controversy dies down.

When Gretchen asks Taylor to show one of her groomsmen around town, she reluctantly agrees. While her and the super hot Loch may not have a lot in common, they seem to laugh and have a great time together. The night goes so well that the two wind up in bed together where they blow each other’s minds. Taylor is quick to tell Loch she doesn’t have time for a relationship though and he agrees that this was a one-off thing. Only they can’t stop thinking about each other.

Loch tries over the next week to connect with Taylor again and she keeps putting him off. Used to women fawning over him, Loch is not usually the one doing the chasing. Determined to find time with her, he shows up at one of her gaming nights where Taylor manages to fall down and hurt herself quite badly. Loch takes the opportunity to move her into his hotel and get closer to her.

When he begins to get homesick, Loch suddenly realizes that if he also married an unsuitable American he would not be eligible for the throne. He decides that he will propose to Taylor, marry her, then in a month or two he will be able to go home and life will be great. Only he doesn’t fill her in on the plan.

Taylor made me laugh out loud a few times. Her geek talk was so funny and I really liked that she wasn’t a clingy, obsessed woman. She approached her relationship with Loch casually and didn’t try to change the rules on him. He was the one that wound up proposing to her and when he told her he loved her, she said yes. Taylor started to wonder if things could possibly work out for her after all. Naturally everything comes crashing down on her when she sees a text message outing Loch’s plan.

Although the overall plot was predictable, there were a couple of things that surprised me. The way the situation with Taylor’s online clinger played out was not at all what I was expecting. It’s always nice when the story can still surprise you.

Overall I really enjoyed this book. It was a fast read that made me laugh, but also had me rooting for the couple. Loch had his asshole moments but he was generally a good guy. Taylor was quirky and funny and I loved her geek side.
