Dare You to Run is the second book in the Unbroken Heroes series by Dawn Ryder, and while I normally don’t like the whole leave them to save them trope, this one worked. I haven’t read the first installment in the series, although I do intend to read it now, but I didn’t feel like I was missing too much. There is definitely a back story that was playing out, but it wasn’t the focus of the book so I was able to get by without missing it. The story revolves around Vitus and Damascus, two people that come from very different worlds, and overall I really enjoyed it.
Vitus Hale is a Navy SEAL who is sent out to rescue the daughter of a Congressman, who slipped her security detail and wound up kidnapped. Once he finds her, Vitus cannot help but be impressed by her bravery and the way she’s not acting like a spoiled brat. There is also the crazy chemistry between the two that keeps zinging every time they are in close contact.
Damascus Ryland grew up in a political family where her expectations were laid out very clearly to her. She was to find a suitable husband, give up the foolish notion of having a career and be the perfect politician’s wife, like her mother. Kidnapping will do some funny things to you and Damascus realizes that she hasn’t really been living. After spending a couple of weeks with Vitus while they hunt the men that kidnapped her, she is head over heels in love.
Vitus proposes and Damascus happily says yes, but there’s just one problem. Daddy doesn’t approve and very coldly informs her that if she doesn’t break up with the SEAL, he will call in some favors and make sure that Vitus and his brother wind up dead. Determined to save him, Damascus breaks things off with Vitus breaking both of their hearts in the process.
Flash forward three years. They haven’t set eyes on each other since the day she gave him back his ring, but now he’s being awarded a medal for his act of bravery. Being so close to him again reminds Damascus how much she still loves him, but she’s determined to keep on course. She has plotted a way to get out of under her father’s control, and although she still won’t get Vitus in the end at least he will still be alive.
Daddy once again has different plans. Determined to be the Vice-President, he promises the man poised for a run for the office that he can have Damascus in exchange for taking him along as VP. She’s not willing to give up so easily, so several things start happening all at once. Starting with her being kidnapped – again.
There were a couple of things that irked me about this book, but not enough to stop my enjoyment of it. The first was the whole virgin having mind blowing orgasms thing. I hate that, but its obviously a thing in books so it is what it is. The second was the way Damascus kept pulling Vitus in and then pushing him away. Her internal dialogue was all over the map. The woman has genius level IQ and is about to become a top scientist, but she can’t seem to keep a coherent thought around Vitus. Now, she does make changes after the first kidnapping and learns how to take care of herself and stand on her own two feet. But she can’t seem to get past that mind going to mush around him thing.
Overall, the book was a fast read and was a good one. There were a lot of moving parts setting up future stories, so we got to meet some of the guys we will no doubt be seeing in upcoming installments which I liked, the story was fast paced and for the most part I really liked the hero and heroine. Looking forward to the next installment.
