Review: Dirty Like Me by Jaine Diamond

I’m a sucker for a rock star romance, but as a sub-genre, it can be a little risky and I’ve suffered through one too many ooh-he’s-a-star subject over story. I’m glad to say this book is not one of those. It’s pretty standard in that we have a ‘normal’ girl and a sexy rocker guy, a tour, intimate hotel rooms and tour buses to drive us to our HEA, but it’s sexy, fun, the telling is good and I’m excited it’s part of a series.

“Every night was pretty much the same. Concert. Rabid fans. After party. After-after party. Fake make out. Followed by a raging case of blue clit.”

Katie works in a coffee house owned by her sister. She’s a failed-to-launch artist who rides a skateboard and has a pooch named Max as her companion. But our beautiful girl next door can’t stay hidden in the Canadian weeds forever. She’s spotted by Jesse, super rock star from the band Dirty, as he goes to hire a model for a video to launch his solo career.

Katie, despite her protests, paint-stained jeans and the fact she’s not a model, is hired by merit of stumbling around in her friend’s modelling agency. Next thing she knows she’s sprawled in fancy underwear on Jesse’s chest with lights, camera and action.

There’s instant attraction between our couple and when the fans go crazy for the video, Jesse decides to make Katie an offer – go on tour as his pretend girlfriend, kiss him and look sexy in public, and he’ll give her a bunch of cash for the pleasure.

So we all know where this is going, right? What? No, not prostitution. Tsk on your mind-set, this is a romance! They get it on OUTSIDE of the contractual arrangements. And there’s a lot of getting it on. In fact, and I can’t believe I’m going to say this, but there’s almost TOO much sex in this book. There’s a sort of continuous foreplay/fuck session that carries on and on with so many orgasms I can’t believe the guy could stand up on stage each night.

The story is good and it’s entertaining, but I wouldn’t have minded a little more conflict. Also there was limited development in Jesse’s character. He was everything hot rock star but the focus was very much on sexy sex, sweet-thing Katie and her life choices.

As escapism in the world of the stage, this was great. I’m looking forward to the prequel coming out (free for JD newsletter subscribers) in November, cos there’s several more hot guys (including one in a kilt with muscular thighs that won’t quit *drools*) and girls just waiting to be hooked up.
