Review: It’s Been You by Rina Gray

its-been-youReviewed by Shelly

This is my first story by Rina Gray and it’s fantastic. This is book 2 in her ‘Crush on You’ series.

Tianna Holliday and her arch enemy, Nathaniel Lawson, are together again. Tianna is a relatively new transplant from Atlanta to NYC. She moved there to get a new and fresh start after her engagement to a former coworker went south. She’s learned her lesson about not sh*tting where you eat, so it’s all good – or so she thinks. Her office mate, Nathaniel, is good looking and people always underestimate him because of that. That’s a new angle that I can’t remember reading that kind of hero in the past. Set against each other for an ad campaign for a single client, Tianna and Nathaniel have no choice but to be civil to each other.

During their grad school year(s), Tianna and Nathaniel were familiar with each other. So much so that Tianna won a coveted internship that Nathaniel’s never forgiven her for. He thinks she won it by using her feminine wiles. It takes a bit of convincing from Tianna to set the record straight with that, but it was well worth it.

There’s a ton of misunderstandings and mistrust between these two and I could that understood that because their history was all about who can outdo the other. Grad school can be a real struggle.

Present day Tianna is full of rules (66 if you’re counting) and regulations. She’s a complete type A but she’s likable. I can’t hate on a woman who likes birthday-cake ice cream. And the way she held off Nathaniel and didn’t fall for his mastery of the human woman, it was absolutely believable that someone as uptight as Tianna wouldn’t fall easily.

Her relationship with Melanie (book 1) was a joy. Their interactions were laugh out loud funny at times considering Mel’s slob like ways and Tianna’s organized ways. These two made for good roommates and better friends. I even like the way that Mel had positive influence on Tianna because gosh knows that woman needed to be talked out of her own head on many occasions.

I really liked Nathaniel. He’s pretty, knows it and doesn’t really take himself too seriously. During his day job in marketing he doesn’t get his hands dirty but that after work gig. Oh yes! Sweet cheese for granny, I couldn’t really tell him ‘no, don’t do that’.

Even his relationship with his father and stepmother lended a nice change to his persistent personality; the love, respect and admiration for his father was quite a treat. It’s rare to get decent parents in many modern romances and I have to give credit where credit is due – that was well done. Now that mother of his – good riddance to bad rubbish.

The chemistry between our hero and heroine was superb. The buildup was perfect for their personalities, especially Tianna. I even thought her initial shyness was spot on and well written. There’s not a lot about this story that didn’t work for me. The ending was a little hokey and hurried but overall fast, fun and engaging – really well done.

Happy reading folks!
