Review: Kept by Maya Banks

keptReviewed by Jaimie

After my intense dislike for the heroine in the first two books in this series, I was really worried about this one. At some point I’m going to go back and re-read those two and see if my opinion changes but in the meantime, I definitely plan to keep going with this series. Thankfully I cannot say enough good things about Kept, the third installment of the Enforcers series by Maya Banks. Hayley and Silas were a great match for each other and I loved them both! I think Silas is my new favorite book boyfriend.

Hayley Winthrop has had a tough life so far. Her mother died when she was really young and then her father, who she was really close with, died of cancer. After her father’s death she finds out he was scammed by a shady insurance agent and despite paying expensive premiums, the policy did not pay out. She’s living in New York on a very modest budget and has earned a partial scholarship to a prestigious music school but she’s still struggling.

Silas Goodnight is Drake’s number one enforcer. In the first two books, we see him form a strong friendship with Evangeline, but he is presented as somewhat ruthless. This book changes all of that. Silas’ childhood was horrific, but he has formed his own family with his brothers, Drake and Evangeline. He was not expecting to ever have a woman of his own, but when he glimpses a desperate Hayley on his building’s security camera, he is instantly drawn in.

When Silas rents out the apartment next to his to Hayley, he finds himself increasingly fascinated by the beautiful and kind woman. Listening to her practice her music soothes his soul in a way he cannot explain. One night however, Hayley is not playing at the usual time. Silas immediately feels something is wrong and he traces the route that she usually takes. He comes upon her just in time, as she’s been attacked by two men.

With broken ribs and a number of other injuries, Hayley is in no position to take care of herself and Silas has her stay with him. He tries to resist the pull between them but is losing the battle. When she overhears him speaking to Evangeline and calling her honey, she immediately misunderstands. With everyone determined to protect Drake’s privacy, the issue of Evangeline keeps coming back to haunt Hayley.

I must say, Hayley gets beat up more often than any heroine I’ve seen in a long time, but she doesn’t wallow in self-pity or give up. Sure has her moments, but she’s earned them. Unlike Evangeline, Hayley isn’t weak and doesn’t need Silas to save her or take care of her. Sure it’s nice, but she can survive on her own which is why I respect her.

Silas was awesome. He has his dick moments of course, but nothing I couldn’t get past. He takes his job as the protector of Drake, Evangeline, and his brothers seriously, and now Hayley is added to his list. Except she’s quickly jumped to the top which is hard for him.

I love all the guys in this series and cannot wait to see them all get their happy endings. They are funny, sweet and protective, but they are also damaged. Silas’ story made me cry and I imagine his is just the beginning.

Overall, I loved this one. Silas and Hayley balance each other nicely, and the sex is HOT. The story moved at a fast pace and had a lot of emotional scenes, and right from the beginning I was rooting for them. Looking forward to the next one!
