Review: Moonshadow by Thea Harrison

Reviewed by Jen

Every so often I am reminded how much I truly enjoy Thea Harrison. I have not loved every single one of the Elder Races books equally, but I absolutely adored this one. This is actually something of a spin off, set in the world of Elder Races but outside of the ongoing story line. So if you’ve never tried those books, this is a fantastic place to jump in.

The heroine is an American police consultant recovering from a shooting. Her entire future opens up when she learns she may be heir to a mysterious castle. All she has to do is figure out a way in. So Sophie travels across the pond, hoping to unlock the mystery and change her life.

That’s where she crosses paths with the sexy man she first encountered in a vision. Nikolas is one of a handful of Dark Fae Knights cut off from their homeworld. He is powerful, arrogant, and bossy. Totally wrong for Sophie, but impossible to resist.

It turns out Sophie’s new castle may be the key to Nik’s future. So they end up thrown together, as Sophie becomes a target for his enemies. They have to protect each other and work as a team to unearth the castle’s secrets. But it’s a dangerous job. And it’s made even more difficult by the fact that they can’t go five minutes without sniping at each other.

These two are like oil and water. And I loved it. Nik has absolutely no idea how to interact with an independent woman. She may not be as strong as he is, but she is resourceful and has her own gifts which cannot be denied. She may make bad choices in men, but she knows her worth and she stands up for herself, which I love.

The sexual tension between them is phenomenal. The payoffs were written to perfection. The love is kind of Insta, but there’s so much great stuff happening in the story it didn’t bother me the way it normally does. And the heroine is smart enough to recognize that they need to take a little more time before they make any permanent arrangements. So kudos for that.

There are some memorable side characters here too, like the puck who really has a pivotal role. I would also like to see more of Nick’s best friend and our villain, Morgan. I feel like there is more to him than meets the eye and I am excited to unwrap that mystery.

Basically, I just loved this book. It is funny and smart and sexy as hell. It’s got action and romance and great world building. The best PNR I have read this year. Can’t wait for the next installment.
