Another winner in Ilona Andrews’ Inkeeper series. As with the two previous books, I chose not to read this as a serial when the authors posted it to their website. I don’t have the patience to read in little snippets over time, and in reading the finished story, I can tear through it without stopping. Not only that, I get the benefit of whatever tweaks the authors choose to do to round out the book. I was not disappointed.
This book addressed some of the larger story arcs, or at least got us closer to them. That excited me, but I also really liked the immediate plot. Basically, Dina’s sister is back and she returns to the inn with her daughter. Once there, she, Arland, and Sean help Dina as she grants sanctuary to a persecuted alien and assists him in his quest to find a new home for the remainder of his people. I found Sunset, the Hiru alien’s, story to be so poignant. Maybe I’m a bleeding heart, but I am telling you, I teared up multiple times while reading this book, and this sad little dude had a lot to do with it. Yes, this is a fun, action packed sci-fi adventure, but it’s more than that, too.
Andrews crafts such amazing characters which elevate the book from good to great. I love Arland. There’s never been any doubt that Sean would be Dina’s HEA, but Arland is funny and powerful and sexy. And he shines in this book. So does Dina’s niece, Helen. She is so wonderfully bloodthirsty. But these two are the tip of the iceberg. I enjoyed the entire mismatched, makeshift family at the Gertrude Hunt, the nosy cop, the merchant fox… even the villain, who I loved to hate.
And of course, at the center of it all is Dina. She is nurturing, warm, loyal, and still totally bad ass. I loved seeing her power and I loved seeing her heart. Sadly, there was no George on page, but he does have a role. We get progress on the romance (and for those who read the online serial, the book features a little more adult content in that regard.) And no one is forgetting about Dina’s missing parents!
I don’t want to spoil too much, because the journey was so much fun. But I will say I was totally satisfied and I can’t wait to see where the series goes next!
