Review: Breath of Fire by Amanda Bouchet

Reviewed by Jen

A Promise of Fire was one of my favorite books of last year. I have been anxiously awaiting this sequel, and I’m happy to report that it absolutely lived up to my expectations. It is not exactly like its predecessor. The core of what makes it so good is still there. The heroine is still feisty and loyal, powerful yet vulnerable. The hero is fierce and sexy and completely in love with her. The world building is fascinating and the secondary characters are rich and interesting.

So what’s different? Sex. Lots and lots of sex. In fact, the first 20% or so felt like it was entirely about the hero and heroine getting it on. That’s not the worst thing in the world. The scenes were hot and satisfying. But it was definitely a departure. And I’m not sure everyone will love the change in equal measure.

This book started right on the heels of the last one. And we see Griffin finally learning the truth and reacting to Cat’s hidden identity. It was rough. So rough, I kept waiting for it to be a nightmare she woke up from. Spoiler alert: It wasn’t. After that, is where all that sex starts.

About a quarter of the way in, the book really takes off. And it is such a fantastic ride. There’s so much action and heart. The Greek gods are there and the Beta Team is there and there are so many obstacles to overcome. And it was totally awesome. I don’t want to spoil all of the great plot points, but suffice it to say, I did not want to put the book down.

Cat and Griffin are such a great power couple. But I really loved spending more time with Kato, Flynn, and Jocasta. And I’m excited for the possibilities getting to know Cat’s sisters and uncovering even more secrets about Cat’s destiny and her ties to Persephone… and what the deal is with Selena.

I absolutely cannot wait for book 3 to see Cat take over the world and put her mom into the ground. My only small plea to Amanda Bouchet is to please cut the number of gah’s down by 99%. Trust me, you’ll make so many readers happy.
