Lisa Kleypas gives us another winner with this second installment in her Wallflowers series. Here, she delivers on the promise of a relationship between Lillian and Marcus. These two were such fun enemies in the last book, you knew that fire would end up transforming into something else… and boy did it ever. These two have great passion and chemistry out of the gate, and it only gets better as they realize what they really want from each other.
As the story begins, Lillian and her family are visiting Marcus’s estate for a month, so her father and the earl can do business. Marcus wants no part of the loud, brash American girl, but he can’t stay away from her. She challenges him like no one ever has. She inflames him in every way. They bicker –they fight– and somehow, they understand each other. When they get too close, Marcus can’t seem to keep his hands off her, and once the genie is out of that bottle, there is no going back.
I really enjoyed the dynamic between these two. Lillian is so genuine and confident in who she is as a person. And while that makes Marcus uncomfortable at first, it is what eventually makes him fall for her so completely. It’s interesting that at first Marcus seems like such a stuffy prig, but he’s really such a good man. He is loyal to his sisters and his friends, and that shows his true character. Even before he realizes how he feels for Lillian, he is there for her is different ways. (I especially loved the scene with the calf’s head.)
There’s a little sideplot where St. Vincent courts Lillian, but don’t worry, there is no love triangle here. In fact, this sideplot actually does a great job setting the stage for his book. He is a complex character –and he definitely needs some rehabilitation. I am very interested to see how that is going to happen.
I loved this story even more with the context provided by Again the Magic, the prequel featuring Marcus’ sisters Aline and Olivia. It really helped me understand his family dynamic, which mattered so much to how this romance played out.
Overall, this is a fantastic romance and fits right in with the other installments I have loved already. Would unreservedly recommend every book I have read in this series.
