Review: Undeserving by Madeline Sheehan

Reviewed by Elle

Ohhhh this book has been a long time coming. The Undeniable series, and Madeline Sheehan will always be one of my favorites, no matter how long she takes to release a book (but please don’t make us wait over two years again! My heart can’t take it!).

This book is a bit different than the rest of the series. We take a break from all the current day drama of the first four books, and go back in time 50 or so years. Now for those that need a reminder, Eva Fox is our book 1 heroine.  She and her man, Deuce, have played fairly central roles in each subsequent book, and this one is no exception.

On his deathbed, Eva’s father, Damon ‘Preacher’ Fox tells the story of his whirlwind relationship with Debbie ‘Wheels’ Reynolds, Eva’s mother. Up until this point, Eva (and us) have always believed Eva’s mother was a teenage runaway that abandoned her as a baby. Eva is 50ish in this latest book, and we’ve followed her life since she was 5 years old in earlier books. She’s never had a mother, so we already know the Preacher and Debbie’s story can’t end with a happily ever after. Which, I know, it’s a problem for us romance readers, and a lot of fans were unhappy about Ms Sheehan’s choice to tell this story. I might have been one of them.

But I’m happy to say, I was wrong. Despite the lack of the HEA, this story was amazing.

Debbie is a street rat, picking pockets to get by, running from a shitty home life. That’s how she meets Preacher. He’s fresh out of jail, and used to having to watch his back at all times. So he notices when she swipes his wallet. Amused by her, he defends her as some Truckers realize she’s duped them too. They escape together, but she loses all her meager belongings in the process. She hates being forced to rely on Preacher, but the kindness he shows her is what’s really off putting to her. Multiple times she steals from him, but every time he catches up with her, he shows her the same kindness.

Attraction and a connection between the two are formed, and Preacher agrees to give her a ride to New York City, but first, they need to stop and check in with his family. Debbie finds herself surrounded by not only his biological family, but the motorcycle club he considers blood. And that’s where all the drama we know and love Madeline Sheehan for, really begins.

Attraction, love, murder, betrayal, family, babies, drugs, sex- this book has it all. It kept me turning pages, desperate to know where Eva’s mum really was, and why she’d really abandoned the man she loved and the baby daughter she adored. I had several theories throughout, which was great cos I really didn’t know which way the author would take the ending.

What it doesn’t have, is the heat level of the earlier books. This book was G rated compared to the earlier ones. There’s still sex, but it really takes a backseat to the connection and story between the two. Maybe because it’s told from a dad to a daughter? I don’t know, but it was a notable difference. It could also use another edit, though there weren’t so many typos that I couldn’t overlook them.

It’s not a book you’d enjoy if you haven’t read the rest of the series, but if you have, it’s a must. You’ll remember all over again why we love the Undeniable series as much as we do. And if you haven’t started the series, and you don’t mind your romance dark, I highly recommend it.

  1. Great review. I read the first book but didn’t continue the series. I’m not sure this would appeal to me but I’m glad you enjoyed it.
