Review: The Secrets of Sir Richard Kenworthy by Julia Quinn

I adore Julia Quinn and I was totally psyched to jump into one of her backlist books that I somehow missed along the way. And at first, I thought I was going to love it. It had all of the light charm and wit I have come to love from this author. On top of that, the heroine is smart and likable, and I thought I could really get behind the romance. After all, the hero saw something special in her that no one else ever has. Sure he has a secret, but how bad could it be, right?

See, the thing is, I figured out the Big Secret pretty early on, and it didn’t bother me all that much at the time, but as the story played out, that changed, along with my opinion of Richard. Simply put, I ended up thinking he was a douchebag of the first order.

Iris has always been a wallflower, so she knows something was up when he starts paying attention to her. But the attentions of a handsome man are hard to ignore; it’s only compounded by the fact that she actually likes the guy and he seems to like her too. A proposal after one week of courtship isn’t normal and she knows it. Still, she ends up marrying him and things only go downhill from there.

I won’t spoil the particulars in case you don’t figure it out, but the lie doesn’t come out right after the wedding like I thought it would. If it had or if he would’ve approached it differently, I could’ve been ok with it. But he held on to his secret and how he did it made this amazing, self-assured woman begin to doubt herself. He broke her down, even as he convinced himself otherwise, and then when the truth finally came out, he was a rank bastard.

I just couldn’t forgive him.

What made it worse was how quickly Iris did. This woman was devastated and rightly so. Then she solves the problem in like a second and everything is cool.

No. No. And more no.

I know Richard did what he did for “good” reasons, but that wasn’t enough to redeem him. And then the resolution was way too easy in the face off all that came before it.

I still love Julia Quinn, but this was my least favorite book of hers. I wouldn’t recommend this one.
