Review: The Sins of Lord Lockwood by Meredith Duran

This is book six in Meredith Duran’s Rules for the Reckless series, but if you haven’t read the earlier installments, don’t worry. I didn’t read them either and not only does this book stand-up fine all on its own, I didn’t want to put it down. I read the whole thing in one sitting.

Tortured heroes are my jam and Lockwood fits the bill in spades. The man was kidnapped right after his wedding and sent to a penal colony under a false name. For years, he was subjected to one misery after another. Only his survival instinct kept him alive and helped him topple his cruel captors. Now that he is back in England, he is on a mission for vengeance against the greedy cousin who arranged for his captivity. Sadly, he wasn’t thinking much about the wife he left behind.

Anna, on the other hand, wants answers from the husband who she thinks abandoned her. He’s been back in England for eight months, so she leaves her home in Scotland, shows up at his home, and refuses to leave. In her heart, she wants answers; she wants some sign of remorse. What she asks for is an heir. So despite the fact that Lockwood believes he can never be her husband in truth, he agrees to give her what he feels is owed to her. This, while still plotting his cousin’s reckoning.

There are some tough parts to read, especially in the first half when Anna doesn’t know the truth. It was heartbreaking to see her so hurt by her husband’s seemingly careless treatment of her. But at the same time, he has endured so much. My emotions were all over the place, especially since it was clear that they loved each other so much.

Flashbacks are scattered throughout the book, giving readers a chance to witness their falling in love… and while I liked them, by the time I got to the last one, I just wanted to stay in the present. I needed to see them work it out.

Lockwood has so much to overcome. The author does such a great job painting the picture of his experience and making me feel his resulting terror and shame. And Anna! Such a strong woman in some ways, but hiding the truth of her tender heart beneath. I loved watching their journey back to each other. In fact, I loved most things about this book.

I think I am going to go check out the earlier books in the series! Would definitely recommend this one for fans of historical romance, who don’t mind a bit of darkness in their story. (I promise, the ending will satisfy.) Lots of feels in this one.
