Review: Eight Simple Rules for Dating a Dragon By Kerrelyn Sparks

Raised on a secluded island in order to hide her magical gifts, Gwennore (Gwen), one of four women, is an innocent in all ways. However, since her sisters have started marrying, she’s seen enough of the world to know that she should hide her magical abilities and that, as a Woodwyn Elf, she is reviled and pitied.

When her niece is kidnapped by dragons of the Norveshka region, Gwen refuses to let go and finds herself in the Norveshka court where curses, plagues, and madness are threatening to destroy the country. With her gift of healing, she discovers that the so called curse is illness and that she is uniquely gifted to help the people, no matter that they don’t trust her. There’s one catch, in order to help she’ll need to pretend that she’s lovers with the gorgeous and playful General Dravenko.

General Silas Dravenko has no problem pretending to be lovers with Gwen. He admires her bravery and intelligence, not to mention her overall physical appearance. However, he has secrets that may destroy the fragile love that is beginning between the two of them.

Soon the two are fighting against time, political machinations and a potential region wide plague. Gwen and Silas will need to forge forgotten alliances, put aside long held fears and go up against enemies more fierce and determined than even dragons if they are to save a nation.

Eight Simple Rules For Dating a Dragon is the third book in Kerrelyn Spark’s Embraced Series, and is a light and humorous Fantasy Romance. As the middle book in this series and even within its own story there are a lot of different elements, a large backstory and a fairly substantial cast of characters. The amount going on is, at times, a bit overwhelming, so I wouldn’t recommend it as a standalone. Although I enjoyed the first two books in the Embraced series (How to Tame a Beast in 7 Days and So I married a Sorcerer) I found the sheer magnitude of backstory and plot made Eight Simple Rules lag in spots and certain elements (Gwen’s heritage, the history of Norveshka, the romance between Dimitri and Annika, etc) that I would have loved to have seen fleshed out a bit more were explained away quickly or left unresolved.

Eight Simple Rules for Dating a Dragon wasn’t quite as simple (See what I did there?) as I’d like it to have been. However if you’re someone who likes to mix your Fantasy with your Romance and enjoys complicated plots, you might like this one. Check it out!
