Review: Rock Chick Reborn by Kristen Ashley

Reviewed by Sara

I’m a huge fan of Kristen Ashley and her Rock Chick series (also just about all of her other series too!) I like alpha, slightly overbearing dudes and sassy, kickass ladies. I like the fact that I know when I read a Rock Chick book that I’m going to bust a gut laughing, ugly cry and seriously consider packing up and moving to Denver.
So, when I woke up this morning to see a surprise release of a new Rock Chick novella, I was more than a little excited.

Rock Chick Reborn is Shirleen’s book. Fans will remember that when smart mouthed, Afro-wearing Shirleen was first introduced back in 2011’s Rock Chick Renegade, she was a one of Denver’s major drug dealers and ran illegal poker games. Of course she’s changed since then and, while she still rocks the ‘fro, she’s left the Denver crime scene behind to become the receptionist for Nightingale Investigations and devoted foster mother to teenagers Roam and Sniff.

Throughout the Rock Chick books, Shirleen’s has been a pillar of strength, a barrel of laughs and an instigator of shenanigans. She’s been as much a part of the gang as any of the girls when it came to making sure romance happened, but has had no romance of her own and a past that was shrouded in mystery. Rock Chick Reborn brings to light the true darkness of Shirleen’s past and the cripplingly low self worth that she lives with because of it. She’s given everything to her foster sons to ensure that they don’t have to live a life like she did and have all the choices she couldn’t have. In fact Shirleen’s so busy caring for the boys, the men of Nightingale Investigations (AKA The Hot Bunch) and the other Rock Chicks, she’s done little living for herself. So, when she meets Moses Richardson her whole world turns upside down.

Moses Richardson is the quintessential Kristen Ashley male protagonist. Moses is hot, he’s alpha and he loves fiercely. A divorced father of two, Moses Richardson sees a future with Shirleen if he can just get her to the point where she realizes she’s worth it. He knows about her past, but isn’t scared of it, he’s in this for the long haul with the woman Shirleen is now. Through the story he’s able to open Shirleen’s eyes to how amazing she is and how much she deserves love.

Rock Chick Reborn is a heartfelt good time. Shirleen’s romance with Moses is sweet and uplifting, while her interactions with her foster sons and the love she shows them will have you reaching for the Kleenex. Fans of the Rock Chick series will love seeing their favorite main characters and a collection of side characters from some of Kristen Ashley’s other books (Keith Robinson from Ride Steady of the Chaos series made me immediately tear up.) and new readers can easily pick up this novella without feeling lost. A great surprise from a favorite author.
