Review: Once Ghosted Twice Shy by Alyssa Cole

Reviewed by Sara

Part of Alyssa Cole’s wildly successful Reluctant Royals series, Once Ghosted, Twice Shy, follows aid to the prince of Thesolo, Likotsi, as she spends a rare day off in New York City trying to forget the woman who left her behind. In most cases the odds of meeting Fabiola, the girl who got away, in a city of millions would be lousy, but Likotsi’s goddess seems to be feeling mischievous and a chance encounter on a stalled subway leads to a day of spontaneous discovery, answered questions and a chance at joy.

Fab had a great time with Likotsi the first time they met and felt that their casual encounter was giving way to a mutual desire for something more. Then life happened and Fab’s world was turned upside down, and instead of reaching out, she shut down, cutting off Likotsi in order to manage the challenges life was throwing her way. Seeing Likotsi again brings all those feeling back to the forefront and the opportunity to spend any amount of time with her is too great to pass up. If Likotsi can give her an afternoon, maybe Fab can explain and their story can have a happier ending.

Once Ghosted, Twice Shy might be a novella, but it reads like a full length novel. Everything from the descriptions of New York City, Likotsi and Fab’s clothes and the food the two eat is written with rich detail and description allowing the reader to feel like they’re along for an adventure in New York City with two super fashionable ladies eating great food and seeing the sites. The descriptions of NYC are particularly lush and joyfully non stereotypical. There’s no kitschy Time Square and the Statue of Liberty mentions, but instead a fun and obviously well thought out description of a well-loved city by someone who knows its eccentricities and hidden beauty.

Likotsi and Fab’s characters are fantastic and multidimensional. Somehow, Alyssa Cole manages to pack in solid backstories, clear character motivations and a ton of emotion into her novella. Even readers who are unfamiliar with the Reluctant Royals series (Go check them out! They’re amazing!) will find it easy to fall in love with Likotsi and Fab and root for their reunification.

This isn’t the first F/F Romance I’ve read, but it is the first that made story and substance as important as the characters’ sexuality. I enjoyed every aspect of Once Ghosted, Twice Shy, found myself easily swept away by Alyssa Cole’s talent for crafting a rich story with exceptional characters and legitimately just felt happier for having read it.
