Review: My Not So Wicked Stepbrother by Jennifer Peel

“Always the bridesmaid and never the bride” phrase seems to fit Emma’s lifestyle. She feels as if she is cursed especially with her last name being Loveless. She is constantly being set up on blind dates by her matchmaker mom. Emma swears off relationships until her mom feels like she truly has found the “one” for Emma.

Emma gets a text from an unknown number and thinking that it is her best friend messing with her she says things that are definitely embarrassing. She then realized that it wasn’t her best friend texting her but her so called “the one” that her mom tried to set her up with. To make matters worse, it was the love of her life that she claimed a long time ago when they were in school. Emma’s life starts to unravel in a good and bad way.

Emma and Sawyer are best friends but there’s chemistry between them that they both try to ignore. Sawyer more than Emma. I almost couldn’t stand the angst between them. When they finally put themselves first it was really beautiful. This is almost a loosely based modern day Cinderella story. There was an Evil “B” of a stepmother which was Sawyer’s mother. Holy hell, I could not stand her. She even gave Emma an ultimatum. I don’ think I have despised a character so much. Emma’s sisters were nasty and mean and her dad did nothing. They really did not know what jewel Emma was and she deserved so much more.

Sawyer was sweet and tried to put boundaries between him and Emma but he really was fooling himself. I just wished he could see more of how his mom was towards Emma. Other than that there really wasn’t anything else that I didn’t like with Sawyer. He met Emma right back with her sarcasm and wit.

There were moments that I wanted to throw the book across the room simply because of the side characters getting in the way. I wanted them gone because they was interfering in the worst way possible. But the characters were so well written that I could not stop reading it. There is a little tearjerker moment but this is well worth reading.
