Review: The Upside of Falling by Meghan Quinn

This was a heartbreaking novel that had me at a loss for words. The cliffhanger was no joke as well. However, the good thing about it is that book two comes out in June so there isn’t a long wait.

Colby has a mission to not deviate from his goal or dreams. He doesn’t have any time for distractions or allow anything “fun” in his life at the present moment. He wants to be a fighter pilot and is preparing to graduate, Soon he meets Rory at a party. He is standoffish and rude. Rory is beautiful, confident, and determined. It is clear the tension is very thick between the two. The distractions begin when Colby finds himself always thinking about Rory, but his dreams leads him to travel and Rory has family obligations that she has to stay home.

Rory had a mindset of loving life no matter what the circumstances were. She sacrificed so much for those that she love. I couldn’t help but love her from the very beginning. Colby had a difficult childhood so I could understand why he acted the way he did at the beginning. He was mostly reserve and kept to himself because of the things that he went through. It was hard for him to be open and pour himself out. I love how Rory helped him with it. The chemistry between the two was so good! One of my favorite parts was how their chemistry was written. Colby did take his time to finally cave in. It is like the roles were in reverse.

The author writes really well. The characters were written as if they had met previously in another lifetime. You could tell that a lot of patience and time went into the character dynamics. It can easily be read in one sitting. The plot pacing was a little bit slow. The focus was primarily on the characters. I felt like some parts of the plot could have been left out. They were more like fillers. The cliffhanger was one of the best parts of the story.
