Jen’s Favorite Books of 2015

It’s hard to believe we’re leaving another great year of reading behind us. In 2015, I found it more difficult to find books that suit my taste. I don’t care to read about billionaire bachelors, rock stars, step-brothers, biker gangs, or BDSM. Take a minute and think about how many titles fell into those categories last year.  I did a lot of backlist reading to fill in the gaps.

There were some really good new releases that I did enjoy; they were just more scarce. Here’s a look at some of the 2015 releases that really satisfied. [Read more…]

Review: Night Unbound by Dianne Duvall

This series has not let me down once.  I was so excited for Zach and Lisette’s story and I am happy to report that this book delivered everything I was hoping for. I loved Zach as a hero and Lisette was the perfect match for him in every way. The romance satisfies; the sex is good. The pacing is just right and the main story arc continues to advance. Like I said… everything I could want. [Read more…]

Review: Darkness Rises by Dianne Duvall

I have yet to meet an installment in this series that I didn’t like. At the risk of gushing a little, I have got to say that the Immortal Guardians has quickly become one of my favorite paranormal romance series. There are many reasons why, but the top three are easy: the characters are engaging and well-drawn; the romances are easy to root for; and the worldbuilding is interesting without being overly complex. There’s also great pacing, fun sexytimes, and plenty of action. Really, what’s not to love? [Read more…]

Review: In Still Darkness by Dianne Duvall

Even novellas in this series manage to satisfy me. You don’t need to read this story to keep up with the series arc. In fact, some of the events take place at the same time as previous books. But fans of the Immortal Guardians wouldn’t want to miss the chance to meet Richart’s mysterious Jenna and watch them fall in love!

Richart first lays eyes on Jenna when he saves her from a vampire attack. In her bite-induced haze, she lays an unforgettable kiss on him and ever since, he has been looking for excuses to see her again. He poses as a shopper in the store where she works, until he works up the nerve to ask her out. From there, the attraction between them only grows. [Read more…]

Review: Phantom Shadows by Dianne Duvall

I so enjoy a redemption story and I’ve been hoping to get one for Bastien from the beginning. It didn’t disappoint. In fact, I’m learning that the Immortal Guardians series is pretty much guaranteed to deliver exactly what I am looking for, every time I pick up another installment.

Bastien is almost universally despised by the other Immortals. After all, he was essentially the villain of book 1, but it wasn’t his fault. He truly believed that he was a vampire and that the Immortals were the enemy. He thought that he was doing the right thing in targeting them, especially Roland, who he believed had killed his sister. A couple of years have passed since Seth took him into the fold, but old hatred dies hard. [Read more…]

Review: Night Reigns by Dianne Duvall

With every single installment I read, I love this series even more. This is Marcus and Ami’s story. And before I get too far, I have to address the big elephant in the room. A lot of readers took issue with the reveal of who/ what Ami really is. It is kind of out there. But I started this series with book 6, so I already knew what she was, long before she told Marcus. The reveal that turned off so many readers, wasn’t a thing for me. So yeah, it is kind of weird (and that says a lot, considering this is a vampire book.) If you can get past that, though, or maybe if you go into it spoiled, I really think you’ll enjoy the book as much as I did. [Read more…]

Review: Darkness Dawns by Dianne Duvall

PNR fans, you should be reading this series. I’m pretty sure I love it. In a sea of books with similar themes, the Immortal Guardians stand out as something… I don’t know, just… better than most others. It features a group of immortal warriors who protect the world from vampires who have gone crazy and destructive. They’re pretty much vampires too, but they have a little something extra that allows them to stay sane and have a special gift or two. I know it sounds like a hundred other series out there, but it’s written really well, with such great characters and a good romance. The world building is really well done. The series arc is interesting. I may be late to this party, but I’m glad I’m finally here. [Read more…]

Review: Shadows Strike by Dianne Duvall

shadows strikeReviewed by Jen

I am late to the Immortal Guardians party. I picked up an anthology a couple of weeks back featuring a short story from this world and liked it enough to try and jump in. Boy, am I glad I did. I really enjoyed this.  It’s the sixth book in the series, and there is clearly some stuff I missed, but none of it detracted from the story at hand, or the romance.

For the past year, Heather has been having the same dream about a vampire attack –and the super-sexy vamp who helps fight them off. Imagine her surprise when her dream becomes reality and suddenly the hot guy from her dream is a flesh and bone charmer standing in front of her. Heather never thought vampires were real, but she carries a special gift of her own, telepathy. Between her own supernatural ability and all those dreams, she takes the news better than most. Review: On the Hunt by Alexandra Ivy, Rebecca Zanetti, Dianne Duvall, and Hannah Jayne

on the huntReviewed by Jen

This anthology is a pretty mixed bag of mostly paranormal romance. It features a few stories from ongoing series… none of which I was familiar with. Here’s a breakdown:

“On the Hunt” – This is my first story from Alexandra Ivy, and served as a pretty good introduction to her Sentinels series. She clearly lays out the basics of the world from the beginning, so I never felt lost and it was easy to focus my attention on the romance. [Read more…]
