Review: Grave Ransom by Kalayna Price

Let me start by saying love triangles suck. Even ones that start out intriguing at first. Even ones where you aren’t immediately sure who you’re rooting for.

You know why? Somebody’s got to lose. And there is a 50% chance that the HEA you’re rooting for is going to crumble at your feet.

All that in mind, I hated the ending of this book. It made me mad and it mad me sad and I hate-tweeted about it seconds after I was done. I’m going to try not to let all of that shadow the rest of my review, but I had to give you total disclosure. It’s a day later and I’m still unhappy. [Read more…]

Review: Grave Visions by Kalayna Price

Waiting is hard. And it’s tempting to give up on a series when you have to wait a long time between installments, especially if you don’t have a concrete date for your patience to payoff.  Trust me when I tell you that you don’t want to write off this series just because it’s been awhile since the last book. If you enjoyed the first three Alex Craft books, you going to love this one too. It picks up seamlessly where Grave Memory left off. And once I returned to this world, it felt like I never left.

If you haven’t read the previous books in this series, this is not the place to start. Pick up Grave Witch and go from there. Really. Go now. [Read more…]

Review: Grave Memory by Kalayna Price

The last 25 percent of this book completely rocked my world.  That doesn’t mean the first 3/4 wasn’t good. It was. But the last quarter took it to an entirely different level. Maybe it’s the romance lover in me, but I was so into this book as it drew to a close that I doubt I would have quit reading if my chair caught on fire.

If you’ve never entered the world of Alex Craft, know these things before deciding whether to give them a try. First: they’re really good Urban Fantasy. Second, if you’re going to start, you need to begin with book 1. And finally, this series is unfinished.  Will it ever be finished? I don’t know.  Book 4 has been pushed back for years and Amazon lists its on-sale date as the year 2099. The author is completely radio silent.  Take from that what you will, but know that when you finish this book, you will be thirsting for more.  And it’s a thirst that may never be quenched. Review: Grave Dance by Kalayna Price

Kalayna Price continues to impress with this second trip to the world of Alex Craft.  If you haven’t read Grave Magic, you should go back and start there. You don’t want to get on the ride when it’s already in motion.

This book picks up about a month after events of the last one, but essentially, few things have changed.  Alex is still working as a Grave Witch, raising shades, though business has picked up a bit.  Her ghost-pal Roy is sticking around. Her love interest, Falin, did not. He disappeared right after the big showdown, leaving Alex feeling quite the fool. After all, we now know he’s the Fae Queen’s lover and assassin.  Kind of hard to make that work. So Alex is trying to get on with her life. [Read more…]

Review: Grave Witch by Kalayna Price

It’s always exciting when I find a new Urban Fantasy series to love. And I can tell from this first installment that the Alex Craft books hit my sweet spot.  There are moments that feel a little familiar. I felt hints of Charley Davidson’s Reyes in the sexy, enigmatic Death. With the grave magic our heroine uses and her affinity for the dead, I caught a little whiff of Anita Blake (of the Guilty Pleasures variety, before all the group sex.) There’s a little estranged, wealthy father action, a la Chicagoland Vampires or Allie Beckstrom. But within the sum of its parts, this book really stands up as a unique and engaging story.  The worldbuilding is well done and original. The pacing is good. And the characters are well drawn and sympathetic. Especially Alex. [Read more…]
