Review: Chill Factor by Rachel Caine

Three books in and the Weather Warden series is keeping me on the edge of my seat. These books are so engaging and unpredictable. I think one of the things I like best about them is that Rachel Caine feels no need to stick to a formula. The trials of the heroine take her to very different places by the end of each installment, yet the series maintains a consistent feel and tone throughout.

This book picks up immediately after the events of the last one. All three installments, in fact, show the roller coaster Joanne has been on in a very short period of time. Only a couple of weeks have passed since her story began. Now she’s human again; David is bound as her djinn and the they are working together to try and contain Kevin, the troubled teenager who escaped with Jonathan. Kevin is using his djinn to keep her away from Las Vegas where he’s holed up, trying to live the high life. [Read more…]

I have to say, at the end of Ill Wind, I wasn’t really sure how Rachel Caine would continue with the Weather Warden series. After all, the main character wasn’t even a Weather Warden anymore. Maybe it should’ve been called the Weather Warden Turned Djinn series… Or maybe something a little snappier. But I am happy to say that be author did not disappoint. And while there is definitely a different feel here, I tore through this book in no time at all. I blinked and it was already over. Not because it was short, but because I was so engrossed in what was happening, I did not realize how much I had read. [Read more…]

Review: Ill Wind by Rachel Caine

Confession time. This is my first Rachel Caine book. I know, I know, she has written a ton of a very successful books, but for some reason, I always thought of her as only a YA author. But I’m happy to say, this book was definitely for adults, and I am so glad a friend nudged me into giving it a try.

The heroine, Joanne, is a Weather Warden, which is where the series gets its name. She has the ability to manipulate the weather, primarily with the elements of water and air. She and others of her kind protect the world from the worst of Mother Nature‘s fury, though others have different affinities with different elements to create specialties. Anyway, as the story begins, Joanne is on the run. Her own people are out to get her, and it seems to be because she is wearing the mark of a demon. [Read more…]

Guest Review: Last Breath

You may remember, several weeks back, Red Hot Books hosted a giveaway for Last Breath by Rachel Caine. The winner, Katie from Bookishly Yours Reviews, agreed to provide a review in exchange for the book. Here is what she had to say:

After 10 books, you’d think that a series would be standing on its last leg, scrambling to find something else to shock and entertain readers, but not Morganville Vampires! Last Breath, the 11th book in the series, is just as amazing as the very first book, if not better.

Rachel Caine does something different in Last Breath; she gives first perspective voices to characters other than Claire. Shane, Michael, Amelie, and Eve each have a section which proved to be a very interesting look inside what these characters are feeling after eleven books with them especially Amelie since she’s such a closed off character.

There’s so much I can give away because, as always, so much happens in these books! There’s some shocking twists along the way, new characters, and an enthralling new layer to the history of the Morganville vampires. Let’s just say, Rachel Caine can really write a story.

If you haven’t read this series yet, I highly recommend them. They’re thrilling, funny, and heart-warming. And definitely not your average vampire story. And if you love this series, then Last Breath is a can’t-miss! 5 stars.
